Liverpool claims that a VAR error compromised the "sporting integrity" of their Premier League match against Tottenham
Liverpool claims that the Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur was played with "sporting integrity" compromised when a goal was disallowed due to a mistake made by the Video Assistant Referee on Saturday.
In the first half of Liverpool's English Premier League match against Tottenham, with 10 men down, the score was tied 0-0. However, forward Luis Díaz turned a Mohamed Salah through ball into a goal, giving his team an unexpected lead. Or so Liverpool and all the onlookers believed.
The goal was controversially and swiftly ruled out for offside, and following Saturday's game, English soccer's officiating body, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), acknowledged that the decision to not award the goal had been made due to a "significant human error."
For Liverpool, who finished the game with just nine players on the field and lost 2-1 as a result of an own goal by Joel Matip with just seconds remaining, it proved to be a costly error.
Liverpool insisted that "any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency," calling it "unacceptable" that the error had been classified as a "significant human error."
In light of the obvious need for escalation and resolution, the club stated that it will now "explore the range of options available."
Liverpool's victory would have taken the Reds to the top of the table after Manchester City's defeat earlier in the day.
Rather, the Reds suffered a heartbreaking loss in a match that saw Curtis Jones sent off in the first half and Diogo Jota in the second, leaving Liverpool down to nine men with more than 20 minutes left in the game.
