The iconic English and Manchester United soccer player Bobby Charlton passes away at age 86

The Premier League team announced on Saturday that Sir Bobby Charlton, an England and Manchester United legend, had passed away at the age of 86.

In 1966, Charlton was a member of the England team that won the World Cup. Two years later, at Wembley, he scored twice as Manchester United won the European Cup.

"Manchester United is in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in our club's history," the statement from the organization said on Saturday.

"Not just in Manchester or the United Kingdom, but everywhere football is played globally, Sir Bobby was a hero to millions of people.

"Sir Bobby will always be remembered as a giant of the game; he was admired for his sportsmanship and integrity as much as for his exceptional abilities as a football player.

"A product of our youth program, Sir Bobby spent 17 years as a Manchester United player, playing 758 games and scoring 249 goals while winning the FA Cup, three league titles, and the European Cup. He scored 49 goals and earned 106 caps for England, which won the 1966 World Cup.

His family released the following statement: "We share the news that Sir Bobby passed away peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning with great sadness. His family surrounded him.

"His family would like to express their gratitude to all of the individuals who have supported and loved him, as well as to everyone who has helped with his care. At this point, we would ask that the family's privacy be respected."

That year, Charlton became the fourth Englishman to win the Ballon d'Or. He was also a member of the 1958, 1962, and 1970 World Cup teams, as well as the 1968 European Championship team. He was awarded 106 caps in total, and in 2015, Rooney once again eclipsed his record of 49 goals for his country.

In 1994, he received a knighthood. Jack, Charlton's brother, competed for England in the World Cup.
