Brazilian soccer legend and four-time World Cup champion Mário Zagallo passes away at the age of 92

Four-time World Cup champion Mário Zagallo, who led and played for Brazil, passed away on Saturday at the age of ninety-two, according to a post on his official Instagram account.

He participated in two World Cup winning teams in 1958 and 1962 before leading an all-conquering Brazil team that is widely considered to be among the greatest teams in history to victory in the competition as head coach in 1970.

After that achievement, he added a fourth trophy in 1994 while serving as Carlos Alberto Parreira's assistant coach, making him the only person in tournament history to win both as a player and a coach.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of our eternal four-time world champion Mário Jorge Lobo Zagallo,” the statement on his Instagram said.

“A devoted father, loving grandfather, caring father-in-law, faithful friend, successful professional and a great human being. A giant idol. A patriot who leaves us a legacy of great achievements.

“We thank God for the time we were able to spend with you and we ask the Father that we find comfort in the good memories and the great example you leave us.”
