An avalanche at a resort near Tahoe left one person dead and one injured
Authorities said that an avalanche at a ski resort near Lake Tahoe on Wednesday morning claimed one life and injured another.
The avalanche happened at Palisades Tahoe, a well-known ski resort that welcomes a large number of tourists each year, at around 9:30 a.m., and the Placer County Sheriff's Office reported that it swiftly sparked a multi-team search and rescue operation for possible casualties. According to the office, no other missing persons have been reported.
“More than 100 Palisades personnel participated in a beacon search, and two probe lines have been completed. The mountain is closed for the remainder of the day,” the sheriff’s office said.
It further stated that the avalanche's debris field measured around 150 feet in width, 450 feet in length, and 10 feet in depth.
The risk of an avalanche will grow throughout the day, the Sierra Avalanche Center issued a warning on Wednesday.
Governor Gavin Newsom released a statement stating, "The state is monitoring and standing by to assist with the avalanche reported at Palisades in Tahoe."
