A significant landslide in Alaska has left at least three dead and three missing

Officials reported three deaths and three missing after a "large landslide" in Alaska.

Officials stated the landslide occurred at mile 11 of the Zimovia Highway near Wrangell, Alaska, before 9 p.m. local time Monday.

According to the Alaska Department of Public Safety, two mountainside homes and one highway waterside home were immediately in the landslide's path. Officials suspect one mountainside residence was unoccupied.

Wrangell police, fire, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, and other emergency responders "started a hasty search to look for survivors," the Alaska Department of Public Safety said.

Tuesday evening's news statement stated that K9 teams from SEA Dogs in Juneau and Wrangell Search and Rescue are looking on the ground for three people, two youngsters and one adult.

He told a press briefing Tuesday afternoon that search and rescue activities are ongoing.

U.S. Coast Guard and drone operators are searching water, officials said.

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy declared a landslide catastrophe.

"We are offering Wrangell all state resources," Dunleavy stated.

Officials say the highway landslide was 500 feet wide.
