Biden enacted legislation that could lead to a ban on TikTok
President Joe Biden signed a measure Wednesday that may prohibit TikTok nationwide, threatening the company's US business.
Congress approved the bill this week as part of a broad foreign aid package for Israel and Ukraine. It passed the House Saturday and Senate Tuesday. The legislation is TikTok's biggest threat since US officials began worrying about it in 2020. TikTok must find a new owner within months or be banned from the US under US law.
President Biden's decision to sign the bill on Wednesday establishes the deadline for a sale as January 19, 2025. Nevertheless, the legislation allows for a potential extension of another 90 days if Biden assesses that progress has been made toward a sale, potentially granting TikTok up to a year before facing a ban.
