In response to the pardon of a child sex abuse case, Hungary's president resigns
Hungarian President Katalin Novak has declared her resignation from office amid growing public backlash over her decision to grant a pardon to an individual involved in a child sexual abuse case.
In a nationally televised address on Saturday, Novak admitted to her error, stating, "I decided to grant a pardon last April, believing that the convict did not exploit the vulnerability of the children whom he had overseen." She acknowledged that her decision, along with the absence of adequate justification, led to doubts regarding the zero-tolerance policy towards pedophilia.
The announcement comes after thousands of demonstrators flooded the streets of Budapest, the country's capital, on Friday, demanding Novak's resignation.
