Iran's Election Commission proposes June 28 for presidential elections

Iran's Election Commission proposes June 28 for Guardian Council of the Constitution presidential elections after President Ebrahim Raisi's death.

On May 19, a helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan province in northwestern Iran killed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, and others. On May 20, Iranian Vice President Mohsen Mansouri confirmed the death of the president and his delegation, who were returning from Azerbaijan.

"The twenty-eighth of June was proposed to the Guardian Council and (the date) is based on general dates," election headquarters said. No election dates have been officially confirmed, they said.

Article 131 of the Iranian constitution requires new presidential elections within 50 days of the president's death or incapacity and the transfer of his powers to the first vice president, Mohammad Mokhber. The vice president, head of parliament (Majlis of the Islamic Council), and head of the judiciary organize the elections in a special council.
