Two dozen more Quaker Oats items recalled for salmonella

After recalling dozens of cereals, granola bars, and snacks last month for salmonella contamination, Quaker Oats is recalling 24 more.

Some Cap'n Crunch and Oatmeal Squares cereals, Chewy granola bars, Gatorade protein bars, and more were recalled Thursday.

Due to salmonella concerns, Quaker has recalled over 60 products since Dec. 15. Many products come in different sizes or packaging.

In a Thursday FDA advisory, Quaker advised consumers to discard recalled items sold in the US, Puerto Rico, Guam, and Saipan. The company offers refunds since its products usually have a SmartLabel that lets customers scan a QR code to check for recalls.

The recall excludes Quaker, instant, grits, oat bran, oat flour, and rice snacks.

CDC says salmonella causes the most foodborne illnesses, however it's hard to track. Each year, the EPA anticipates over 1 million foodborne salmonella illnesses in the U.S.

Six hours to six days after consuming contaminated food, salmonella produces diarrhea, fever, and stomach pains. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and headaches. Four to seven days without medication usually cures these problems.

The infection can be lethal in children under 5, seniors, and persons with weaker immune systems.
