The Los Angeles Olympics will feature flag football in 2028

Flag football was proposed for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the first time in 32 years that the Summer Games will return to the US.

Later this week, the International Olympic Committee will vote on the proposal in Mumbai, India. Baseball and softball, which have been on and off the LA proposal for decades; lacrosse; squash; and cricket, which is virtually unknown in the US but popular worldwide, were also proposed.

LA chairman Casey Wasserman called the new sports “relevant, innovative and community-based, played in backyards, schoolyards, community centers, stadiums and parks across the U.S. and the globe.”

Flag football is a 5-on-5 game played on a 50-yard field. Players make “tackles” by pulling a flag from their belts. There are no offensive and defensive linemen. The U.S. men won gold at the World Games last year, but the women lost to Mexico.

After its Paris debut next year, breakdancing will be extinct in LA. Karate, kickboxing, and motorsports were rejected.
