Melissa Hoskins, a two-time Olympic cyclist, died at the age of 32 after being hit by a car

Melissa Hoskins, an Olympic track cyclist from Australia and a past world champion, passed away on Monday at the age of 32, the country's Olympic committee announced.

A 32-year-old woman in Adelaide, Australia, died after being struck by a car driven by a man "known to the woman," according to a statement made public by South Australian Police on Sunday. She was identified as Hoskins by the local media.

According to the police statement, the woman "suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment." She sadly passed away in the hospital over night.

The 33-year-old man who was "arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care, and endangering life" was not given a name in the police statement.

The man has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear at the Adelaide Magistrates Court on March 13, according to the police statement.

Hoskins was an accomplished track rider who, as a member of Australia's women's team pursuit quartet in 2015, won a world championship and set a new record.

In the same event, she competed in both the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, narrowly missing out on a medal in London (2012).

Following the Rio Olympics, she retired in May 2017. She wed Dennis in February 2018 and the two of them had two children.
