Baseball's icon Willie Mays has died at the age of 93
According to the San Francisco Giants, baseball legend Willie Mays, who was regarded by many as one of the greatest players in the history of the game, passed away.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that San Francisco Giants Legend and Hall of Famer Willie Mays passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 93,” the team said.
"He leaves us with a lasting reminder: to work hard and find joy in this great game and this extraordinary life," the Giants posted Tuesday evening on X. "Say Hey, Willie Mays. The best there ever was."
In a statement released on Monday, Mays said he would not be able to go to Thursday's Giants special tribute game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The game is being played at Rickwood Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama, in honor of both Mays and the Negro League team he started his professional career with—the Birmingham Black Barons.
The MLB said Thursday's game will now include a "pregame ceremony honoring the life of Willie Mays."
In 23 major league seasons, mostly with the New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants, he finished with 660 career home runs – then the second most behind legend Babe Ruth.
Mays led the National League in home runs and steals in four seasons and in slugging five times. He hit over .300 ten times and had a career average of .301.
The speedy center fielder also was as dominant in the field as he was at the plate, winning 12 Gold Gloves.
