D.J. Hayden, a former NFL cornerback, died in a car accident that killed five others, according to the university
The University of Houston released a statement stating that D.J. Hayden, a former NFL cornerback, was one of the victims of an early Saturday morning car accident in Houston.
At a press conference, Megan Howard, Assistant Chief of the Houston Police Department, stated that five of the victims were men and one was a woman.
During the briefing, police withheld the victims' names. Three former University of Houston football players, Hayden, Ralph Oragwu, and Zach McMillian, were among the fatalities of the collision, according to a statement from University of Houston Athletics.
According to Howard, at around two in the morning local time, Houston police received 911 calls informing them of a serious auto accident involving "two vehicles," which included a black Chrysler 300 and a black Acura SUV.
Howard reported that one of the fast-moving cars ran a red light, and the driver of that car passed away at the scene.
Hayden, 33, was a player for the Oakland Raiders, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Washington Commanders, among other NFL teams. In 2011 and 2012, he was a standout defensive back for Houston before signing with the Oakland Raiders.
32-year-old McMillian was a member of the Cougars from 2010 to 2013.
