After achieving the top spot at the end of the year for a record-breaking eighth time, Novak Djokovic receives his trophy
After securing the top spot at the end of the year for a record-breaking eighth time, Novak Djokovic was awarded his trophy on Monday.
At the ATP Finals, Djokovic needed just one victory to guarantee his place at the top. In his opening encounter, the 24-time Grand Slam champion defeated Holger Rune 7-6 (4), 6-7 (1), 6-3 in a duel that lasted more than three hours on Sunday and into Monday morning.
The award recognizing Djokovic's accomplishment was given to him by ATP President Andrea Gaudenzi on Monday afternoon. Subsequently, Djokovic appeared for photos alongside his family, physical trainers, and coaching staff.
“It’s obviously the crown of the season, finishing the year as No. 1 in the world is a dream of every tennis player,” Djokovic said. “It’s one of the most difficult things to do in our sport. Winning Grand Slams and being No. 1 in the world are probably the pinnacles of the sport.”
Two years prior, the 36-year-old Djokovic had already surpassed the previous record holder Pete Sampras (six years at No. 1).
