A shooting at Tuskegee University in Alabama left 1 person dead and 16 injured
Tuskegee University in Alabama was the scene of a shooting early Sunday that left one person dead and over a dozen others wounded, according to the school and officials. The incident happened as the 100th homecoming week was drawing to an end at the historically Black university.
Law enforcement officials verified that an 18-year-old juvenile was killed in the early Sunday morning shooting on campus. During the shooting, a total of 16 individuals were hurt, 12 of whom were shot.
Thonnia Lee, a university spokesperson, described the deceased teenager as "a non-university individual." "Several others, including Tuskegee University students were injured and are receiving treatment at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery," Lee stated.
According to the institution, local law enforcement and campus authorities assisted emergency services in securing the scene. The State Bureau of Investigation in Alabama has launched an ongoing investigation into the shooting.
"The university is in the process of completing student accountability and notifying parents. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available," the university said.
Whether a suspect or suspects had been named in the incident was unknown. No arrests have been made, according to a news statement from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, which includes the State Bureau of Investigation, released shortly before noon Eastern Time on Sunday.
"At approximately 1:40 a.m., Special Agents received notification of multiple individuals shot on the campus of Tuskegee University," the agency said, noting they were "still in the process of gathering and examining information relative to the sequence of events which ultimately led to the shooting."
The university announced that grief counselors will be accessible to students in the school chapel on Monday, November 11, and canceled all courses for that day.
