The Holmes County trail ride shooting left 3 people dead and 8 injured
Three people were killed and eight injured in Holmes County, Mississippi, early Saturday after at least two gunmen opened fire on a group of several hundred people celebrating a school's homecoming football victory at an outdoor path after the game concluded, according to authorities.
Holmes County is approximately 70 miles north of Jackson, the state capital.
According to Holmes County Sheriff Willie March, deputies responded to a 12:30 a.m. report stating that numerous people had been shot or killed Saturday near North Highway 17, roughly 5 miles from Lexington.
March stated that the incident occurred following the Holmes County Consolidated School's homecoming party.
“The football team had won the homecoming game and people wanted to go out and celebrate the win, but others didn’t have that same intention,” March said, noting there were no incidents at the game.
According to March, individuals were on the trail ride when a shooter opened fire on the crowd after a fight between two young males. The specifics of the altercation remain unknown at this time.
Willie March identified the three fatalities as Shundra Chestnut, 19, of Kosciusko, John Jenkins, 19, of Durant, and Martel Gibson, 25, of Durant.
March reported that several additional injured people were evacuated to local hospitals or the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
This case is currently being investigated, and information about any potential suspects has not yet been disclosed.
