A shooter opened fire on the main campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee today, killing at least two people and injuring numerous more, according to officials.

It is Florida's sixth mass shooting this year, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive.

According to FSU Chief of Police Jason Trumbower, the gunfire occurred at 11:50 a.m., near the student union. He stated that university police arrived swiftly, neutralizing and apprehending the gunman. Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell stated that the alleged gunman "did not comply with commands."

Trumbower said the two persons slain were not pupils at the school. Police stated five more people were shot, but a total of six were taken to the hospital. It is unclear whether the sixth person is the culprit, but investigators say he has been transported to the hospital.

Leon County Sheriff Walter McNeil identified the suspect as Phoenix Ikner, age 20. Ikner is the son of a Leon County sheriff's officer, he claims. Trumbower believes he is now enrolled at Florida State University.

McNeil said the suspect had access to his mother's guns since she worked for the sheriff's office. According to Revell, the firearm recovered on the defendant during his arrest is his mother's former military weapon. According to a law enforcement officer, a shotgun was recovered in the student union, as well as another gun in the suspect's automobile.

When police apprehended the suspect, he exercised his right to remain silent, according to Revell.

President Donald Trump called the shooting “a shame,” but said he was unlikely to seek changes to the nation’s gun laws. He told reporters in the Oval Office that “the gun doesn’t do the shooting, the people do.”
