Sergio Brown, a former NFL player, has been charged with his mother's murder, according to the police

After a warrant for first-degree murder in his mother's death was issued on Tuesday, former NFL star Sergio Brown—who had been missing since her death last month—was taken into custody, according to a statement from the police.

According to Maywood, Illinois, police, Brown, 35, was detained in San Diego while trying to re-enter the United States from Mexico. According to authorities, he is awaiting extradition to the Chicago suburb of Maywood, where he will be tried for murder.

According to San Diego Sheriff's Department inmate records, Brown was detained by the organization on a felony fugitive arrest warrant on Wednesday morning.

His mother, Myrtle Brown, 73, was found dead on September 16 in a creek outside her Maywood house, according to Maywood police. Police stated that relatives had informed them that neither she nor her son could be located or contacted.

According to spokeswoman Natalia Derevyanny, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office concluded that she died from injuries sustained during an assault, and the mode of death was declared a homicide.

Before signing as an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots in 2010, Sergio Brown was a defensive back for Notre Dame. He was a member of the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts, and Patriots for seven seasons during his NFL career.
