Biden will host Trump at the White House on Wednesday
The Oval Office will host a meeting between President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday morning, the White House said on Saturday.
Biden invited the two to meet at 11 a.m., White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement, adding that more information about the meeting will be made public.
At her concession speech at Howard University in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, the vice president told supporters, “Earlier today, I spoke with President-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory. I also told him that we will help him and his team with their transition and that we will engage in a peaceful transfer of power.”
Following the election, it is customary for the departing president to host the incoming commander in chief as part of a cordial handover of power. But in 2020, Trump refused to invite Biden because he contested the election results using fabricated claims of voting fraud. Additionally, Trump did not show up for Biden's 2021 inauguration.
In addition to 2020, it has long been customary for the current first lady to welcome the next one to the White House. Then-First Lady Michelle Obama gave Melania Trump a tour of the White House's private residence and welcomed her for tea in the Yellow Oval Room in 2016.
When Trump becomes the 47th president of the United States, he will also become the second president to serve two non-consecutive terms. Trump was the 45th president of the country. Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th president, respectively.
