UN relief chief calls for a renewal of the Gaza humanitarian ceasefire
On Friday, Israel began fighting back against Hamas, but the UN relief chief has called for a renewed humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
People in Gaza are afraid and have nowhere safe to go, according to UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths.
The southern portion of the enclave, where it had previously advised civilians to seek shelter, was the site of an expansion of operations, the Israel Defense Forces announced on Friday.
He added that there is a severe shortage of food and water for people. Additional relief supplies were able to enter Gaza as a result of the fighting halt.
According to Griffiths, the seven-day cease-fire offered "a glimpse of what can happen when the guns fall silent."
