Oscar-nominated actor Burt Young, who portrayed Paulie in the "Rocky" movies, passes away at the age of 83

Burt Young, the Oscar-nominated actor who portrayed Sylvester Stallone's gruff, muttering best friend, cornerstone, and brother-in-law Paulie in the "Rocky" film series, passed away.

Young's daughter, Anne Morea Steingieser, told the New York Times on Wednesday that her father passed away in Los Angeles on October 8. No reason was provided. 83 years old.

Young starred in critically acclaimed television series and movies such as "The Sopranos," "Once Upon a Time in America," and "Chinatown."

However, his most well-known role was always that of Paulie Pennino in the six "Rocky" films.

When Paulie first shows up in the 1976 film "Rocky," he is a foul-mouthed, enraged meatpacker who mistreats Adrian (Talia Shire), his sister, and the two of them live in a tiny Philadelphia apartment. He ruins a turkey that Adrian had in the oven and chastises the timid, meek Adrian for initially declining to go on a Thanksgiving night date with his friend and coworker Rocky Balboa.

Raised in Queens, New York, Young also held jobs as a carpet layer, a professional boxer, and a member of the Marine Corps before deciding to pursue acting, where she trained at the Actors Studio under the renowned actor Lee Strasberg.

Gloria, his 13-year wife, passed away in 1974.

Robert, his brother, and one granddaughter survive Young in addition to his daughter.
