Bundesliga secures additional spot in Champions League
Borussia Dortmund's 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain secured Germany's second place in UEFA's coefficient ranking, ensuring five Bundesliga teams in the Champions League next season.
Serie A had already secured first place last month, and Dortmund's win means Germany cannot be overtaken by England and France.
"We wanted to qualify for the Champions League through the Bundesliga and not this way," Dortmund manager Edin Terzic said after beating PSG. "But the fact that it will be enough to qualify as fifth is also partly down to our success, our contribution.
The Premier League were heavy favorites to finish second after Italy, but a harsh quarterfinal draw eliminated Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, and West Ham United. The Europa Conference League only includes Aston Villa.
Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen defeated Arsenal and West Ham to reach the semifinals, strengthening Germany.
Dortmund's sole Champions League win was in 1997, when the event had expanded from 16 teams in four groups to 24 in six pools. Lars Ricken, who scored Dortmund's most famous goal—an exquisite curling finish against Juventus in the final—became managing director last month.
