Manchester United beats Manchester City 2-1 in the FA Cup final
Manchester United beat overwhelming favorite Manchester City 2-1 in the FA Cup on Saturday to deprive its crosstown rival back-to-back league and cup doubles.
United won their first trophy of the season, denying City the first English league-cup double. United also qualified for Europa League next season.
Pre-match, United had lost six of its last seven meetings versus City and four of its last five finals, while City was having another great season.
But Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo scored two first-half goals in short succession to rattle the Premier League champion and make this the first men's FA Cup final with two teenage goalscorers, according to Opta.
United lead at halftime, but City pressured in the second half and equalized in the 87th minute when substitute Jeremy Doku fired into the bottom corner.
By then, Erling Haaland had hit the bar, Kyle Walker had pushed Andre Onana into two saves, and substitute Julian Alvarez had missed a close-range shot with just the keeper to beat.
In the 143-year history of the FA Cup, Manchester United has won it 13 times, second only to 14-time champion Arsenal. Manchester United's triumph also secured them a place in Europe's second-tier club competition, the 2024–24 UEFA Europa League.
