President Joe Biden arrives in Paris to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day
President Joe Biden arrived in Paris on Wednesday to commemorate the anniversary of D Day and participate in a state visit hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.
Biden will be joined by dozens of World War II veterans to honor the pivotal moment in the global conflict. A ceremony will celebrate the British, Canadian, and U.S. soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944.
During his visit Biden will speak about defending freedom and democracy at Pointe du Hoc, a cliff where Army Rangers courageously seized artillery amidst gunfire to protect forces landing on Omaha Beach below.
However Bidens primary focus will be strengthening relationships with allies amid challenges such as Russias actions in Ukraine Chinas growing influence and potential disruptions to the global order due to upcoming elections.
Biden plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky while in Normandy and later at the G7 summit, in Italy week according to White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan.
