5.1 magnitude earthquake strikes near Oklahoma City

On Friday night, a preliminary magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck to the east of Oklahoma City, followed by at least two smaller tremors, as reported by the US Geological Survey.

The main earthquake occurred at 11:24 p.m. local time, approximately 5 miles northwest of Prague, Oklahoma, and roughly 42 miles from Oklahoma City, according to the geological survey. Prague, a small city with around 2,000 residents, felt the impact of the quake.

Reports from USGS indicate that the shaking was felt across a wide area of the state, including in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Additionally, reports suggest that the tremors were felt as far away as Wichita, Kansas.

Shortly after the main quake, smaller tremors measuring magnitudes 2.6 and 3.5 were reported in the same vicinity, according to USGS.

The US Geological Survey notes that earthquakes east of the Rocky Mountains tend to have a wider-reaching impact compared to earthquakes of similar magnitude in the western US.
