Steve Scalise will have a stem cell transplant

According to a statement released by his office on Friday, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise will receive a stem cell transplant. This will likely prevent him from being in Washington and force him to work remotely until February.

The Louisiana Republican declared in August of 2023 that he had begun treatment after receiving a diagnosis of a type of blood cancer.

“Last month, Leader Scalise successfully completed induction chemotherapy and had a positive response. It has now been determined he is eligible for an autologous stem cell transplant,” the statement from Scalise’s office said.

"He is currently undergoing the transplant process, marking a significant milestone in his battle against cancer," the statement continued. Following the treatment, he will work remotely while recovering under the care of his medical team until his return to Washington next month.

Scalise announced his diagnosis of multiple myeloma in August, calling it "a very treatable blood cancer."
