"Nowhere is safe in Gaza" UN's top human rights official says
The top UN human rights official stated on Sunday that the death of civilians in Gaza schools and the widespread evacuation of people from Al-Shifa Hospital are acts that violate the fundamental rights that international law grants to civilians.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stated that "rules of international humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality and precautions in carrying out the attacks, must be strictly adhered to." “Failure to adhere to these rules may constitute war crimes,” he said.
In the past, the Israeli military has denied any involvement in war crimes, arguing that its attacks on targets it claims are Hamas are legal and that it aims to reduce the number of civilian casualties.
Türk described the events of the last two days as unbelievable, adding they were beyond comprehension.
"Nowhere is safe in Gaza," he cautioned, citing the hundreds of individuals who had left Al-Shifa Hospital and were spotted traveling south.
