Elon Musk meets with a top official from China in Beijing
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, held an undisclosed meeting with China’s second-ranking official during an unpublicized trip to Beijing.
Musk's discussion with Chinese Premier Li Qiang coincided with the Beijing Motor Show, where Chinese automakers are showcasing their latest electric vehicles from April 25 to May 5.
According to Chinese state media, during their Sunday meeting, Li expressed his hope for the United States to engage in mutually beneficial cooperation with China, citing Tesla's operations in China as a successful example of collaboration.
Musk's travel hadn't been announced, leaving uncertainty about whether he might attend the Beijing auto show, where Chinese electric vehicles directly compete with Tesla's models.
This visit by the billionaire entrepreneur follows his recent cancellation of a planned trip to India to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing "very heavy Tesla obligations."
Shanghai is Tesla's largest non-US manufacturing site, producing half of its vehicles.
Musk has undertaken multiple visits to China in recent years, concluding his most recent visit in June of the previous year.
