According to a press release, HBO said on Thursday that the "House of the Dragon," the prequel series to "Game of Thrones," will return for Season 3.

The news is made prior to Sunday's premiere of the second season of the show.

“We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular Season 2, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for Season 3,” HBO programming Francesca Orsi said in a statement on Thursday.

Based on George R.R. Martin's "Fire & Blood," "House of the Dragon" takes place 200 years before the events of "Game of Thrones." The main characters in the House Targaryen origin narrative are Matt Smith, Emma D'Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Matthew Needham, and Sonoya Mizuno.

Launched in 2022, the series quickly amassed millions of viewers. The finale of the first season drew 9.3 million viewers, making it the most-watched final episode night for an HBO series since “Game of Thrones” concluded in May 2019, as stated by the network.

Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” is set to stream on Max this Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT.
