Spain, Norway, and Ireland have said that they will recognize a Palestinian state
Ireland, Spain, and Norway indicated they will recognize Palestinian statehood in the coming days, with additional EU members expected to follow.
The trio of nations hopes their May 28 announcement will jumpstart a political process that might end bloodshed and persuade Israel to accept a two-state solution.
"In the midst of a war, with tens of thousands killed and injured, we must keep alive the only alternative that offers a political solution for Israelis and Palestinians alike: Two states, living side by side, in peace and security," said Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz called the Irish, Norwegian, and Spanish ambassadors back to Israel immediately. Israeli's foreign ministry said in a Tuesday video that "recognizing a Palestinian state will lead to more terrorism, instability in the region and jeopardize any prospects for peace."
“Ireland and Norway intend to send a message today to the Palestinians and the whole world: terrorism pays,” Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said. He said that the recognition could impede efforts to return Israeli hostages being held in Gaza and makes a cease-fire less likely by “rewarding the jihadists of Hamas and Iran.”
