The creator of the Glock pistol, Gaston Glock, passes away at age 94
The creator of the widely used gun bearing his name, Gaston Glock, passed away on Wednesday. He was ninety-four years old.
His death was reported by the Glock company on its website, but no cause or further information was provided.
According to the company, the Glock is used in over 65% of US federal, state, and local agencies. It is also a common reference in music, movies, books, and other forms of media.
Glock began his career as an engineer in Austria. On the website of the company, it states that he founded the Glock company in 1963. Having little prior experience with firearms, he created the pistol in his garage metalworking shop, where he also produced curtain rods and knives.
In the early 1980s, he created the Glock service pistol, which was semi-automatic, for the Austrian military. The Glock could hold up to 17 rounds of ammunition and was lightweight due to its nylon-based polymer frame rather than conventional steel.
