Kaylee McKeown of Australia sets the world record in the 50-meter backstroke, creating swimming history

The world records for the 50, 100, and 200-meter backstrokes were all held simultaneously by Australia's Kaylee McKeown, who broke the record on Friday.

The previous record, set by China's Liu Xiang in 2018, was beaten by McKeown, who finished in 26.86 seconds in the Duna Arena during the World Cup event in Budapest, Hungary.

McKeown, 22, has set three backstroke marks this year, including the world record. This completes his hat trick of records.

As per World Aquatics, McKeown declared, "I am obviously very, very happy." That's great to have accomplished, as I never thought of myself as a sprinter.

The world record for the 50-meter backstroke was achieved by Sophie Edington in 2008, and McKeown is the first Australian to hold it.

In 1997, World Aquatics began collecting a record for the 50m swim.
