Conflicts in Lebanon have forced thousands of people from border towns

Conflicts along the border with Israel have forced more than 4,200 people from villages in south Lebanon, and local officials said on Friday that they are ill-prepared for the much larger exodus that would follow if the limited conflict turns into an all-out war.

In Tyre, a seaside city located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the border, about 1,500 of the displaced are being housed in three schools.

Since the latest Israel-Hamas war broke out on October 7, the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and affiliated Palestinian groups in Lebanon have been attacking northern Israel with missiles on a daily basis. In response, Israel has been shelling border areas in south Lebanon. At least 22 people have died in Lebanon as a result of the fighting to date, four of them were civilians.

On Friday, there were still sporadic clashes and several airline cancellations for Beirut. Germany, Saudi Arabia, and the United States are among the nations that have advised their citizens to evacuate Lebanon.
