With a $21 million opening weekend, Beyoncé's "Renaissance" is the top film at the box office

This weekend, Beyoncé ruled the box office.

AMC Theatres estimated Sunday that Beyoncé's concert film, "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé," opened first in North America with $21 million in ticket

After Thanksgiving, the box office is traditionally slow, but “Renaissance” beat the odds. A picture has opened over $20 million on this weekend for the first time in 20 years, not including inflation.

Queen Bey wrote, filmed, and produced “Renaissance,” about her Grammy-winning album tour. When it opened in 2,539 U.S. and Canadian theaters and 94 overseas territories, it made $6.4 million from 2,621 cinemas.

Even though “Godzilla Minus One,” “Animal,” Angel Studios’ sci-fi thriller “The Shift,” and Lionsgate’s John Woo-directed vengeance flick “Silent Night” were released, it was a sluggish weekend. Top-10 films should gross $85 million.

Despite falling short of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour”'s $92.8 million launch in October, “Renaissance” had a strong start for a concert film. No one anticipated “Renaissance” to match “The Eras Tour,” which is closing its theatrical run with $250 million worldwide. Swift's concert film debut broke the $32 million mark set by Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber in 2008 and 2011, respectively.
