Xavier Worthy, a Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver, was arrested Friday night in Williamson County, Texas, on a charge of assaulting a family or household member by limiting breathing or circulation.

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office booked Worthy, 21, into jail on Friday night. The arrest of the player, who had not secured bond as of early Saturday afternoon, was not detailed in online documents.

According to Williamson County Sheriff's Office records, Worthy, 21, was detained in Georgetown, Texas.

According to the jail records, he is charged with third-degree felony assault for obstructing the breathing or choking of a family or household member. This offense "is committed by intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly impeding the normal breathing or circulation of the blood of the person by applying pressure to the person's throat or neck or by blocking the person's nose or mouth."

"We will continue to cooperate with Williamson County authorities as we have full faith their thorough investigation will support Mr. Worthy's innocence," the attorneys wrote in a statement.

In Texas, blocking a family member's breathing or circulation is a third-degree felony punishable by two to ten years in jail and a $10,000 fine.

Worthy was taken 28th overall in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft.  As a rookie, he had 59 catches for 638 yards, 104 running yards, and nine total touchdowns, according to ESPN. During the playoffs, he became the team's top receiver. He competed in the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans.

Worthy was born in Fresno, California, and had played for the University of Texas Longhorns before entering the NFL. Williamson County contains portions of Austin.

In the Chiefs' 40-22 Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in February, Worthy caught eight catches for 157 yards and two scores.
