A senator from the DFL party was arrested in Detroit Lakes on suspicion of burglary
Senator Nicole Mitchell, representing DFL-Woodbury, was apprehended Monday morning in Detroit Lakes and taken into custody at the Becker County Jail on suspicion of first-degree burglary.
According to Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd, at 4:45 a.m. on Monday, a homeowner on Granger Road contacted 911 to report a burglary in progress. Responding officers subsequently arrested a woman found inside the residence, identified as Mitchell, 49. Mitchell was then booked into the Becker County Jail and remained on the jail's roster into early Monday afternoon.
Elected to the Senate in 2022 for her first term, Mitchell serves as the vice chair of the Senate State and Local Government and Veterans Committee. Prior to her political career, Mitchell worked as a television meteorologist for KSTP and Minnesota Public Radio. Additionally, she holds the rank of commander in the Air National Guard's 126th Weather Flight.
Marc Kimball, spokesperson for the Senate DFL, issued a statement declining to comment on Mitchell's arrest.
“The Senate DFL Caucus is aware of the situation and has no comment pending further information,” Kimball said.
