Premier League teams to vote on VAR elimination next season
Premier League clubs will vote on whether to eliminate video assistant referees (VAR) from next season at their annual general meeting next month.
Wolves have officially put forward a proposal, to the Premier League triggering a vote among the 20 member clubs who will gather in Harrogate on June 6.
In a statement Wolves argued that the marginal improvement in accuracy brought by VAR goes against the essence of the sport and urged for its elimination. While the Premier League opposes this move they point out that decision accuracy has risen from 86 percent pre VAR to 92 percent post its introduction at the beginning of the 2019 20 season.
Highlighting their commitment to ensuring the outcomes for football Wolves outlined ten reasons for getting rid of VAR citing concerns about its impact on goal celebrations and its potential role in sparking corruption allegations.
Although acknowledging some reservations regarding VAR the Premier League remains steadfast in backing this technology and pledges collaboration, with PGMOL, the referees organization to enhance its effectiveness.
Premier League clubs have already approved the introduction of semi-automated offside technology for the 2024-25 season.
