Taiwan quake of 7.2 magnitude prompts tsunami warnings

A significant earthquake measuring 7.4 in magnitude struck off the eastern coast of Taiwan on Wednesday, as reported by the US Geological Survey. This event prompted warnings of potential tsunamis for both Taiwan and southern Japan.

The earthquake's epicenter was approximately 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of Hualien city.

Following the earthquake, Taiwan's Central Weather Administration issued a tsunami warning, advising residents, although not all received the alert, to expect a tsunami impacting the northern coastal area and recommending evacuation to higher ground.

The Japan Meteorological Agency also issued a tsunami warning for Miyakojima and Okinawa islands, cautioning of waves reaching heights of up to 3 meters expected imminently.

In the aftermath, Taiwan experienced several aftershocks, including one measuring 6.5 in magnitude, according to the USGS.

The Philippines' seismology agency likewise issued a tsunami warning following the strong earthquake in Taiwan, with coastal areas facing the Pacific Ocean expected to encounter significant tsunami waves.
