Kia has issued a recall for all Telluride SUVs from 2020 to 2023, along with some 2024 models, totaling 427,407 vehicles, due to a potential issue causing them to roll away when placed in Park.
The problem stems from an assembly error that may prevent two critical drivetrain components—the intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft—from fully engaging. This could result in noticeable symptoms such as grinding noises, vibrations, or unusual sounds when navigating bumps or making turns. Additionally, drivers might experience difficulty shifting into Drive or Reverse.
To address this issue, Kia plans to install a software update that will automatically activate the parking brake as needed. If there's any physical damage to the intermediate shaft, dealers will replace it. Kia has also stated that they may reimburse owners who have already incurred expenses for related repairs.
In the interim, drivers are advised to manually engage the parking brake whenever they park the vehicle until they can schedule the free recall repair at an authorized dealership.
According to documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Kia has acknowledged 16 instances of unintended vehicle movement but has reported no crashes or injuries associated with the recall.
