3 Dead After Amtrak Train Hits Vehicle in Western New York

Three individuals lost their lives in western New York after their vehicle was hit by a northbound Amtrak train, fire officials reported on Saturday.

The collision took place just before 8 p.m. in North Tonawanda, part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area, according to a news release issued by the fire department. Upon arrival, firefighters found three people trapped inside the vehicle and proceeded with extrication efforts.

Despite initiating “resuscitative efforts,” first responders were unable to save the victims, who were declared dead at the scene, officials stated.

"There have been no reported injuries to the 21 passengers or crew onboard. Amtrak is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident," said the spokesperson.

Emergency crews stayed on-site for nearly two hours following the incident. Peer counseling and mental health resources were provided to all first responders present. The identities of the victims have not yet been released by authorities.
